A New Magazine for the United Church of Canada: Broadview

When I heard that The United Church Observer was planning on relaunching it’s magazine, with a new name and mission, even before I got the job I began to think about what I would do to make this 190 year old magazine that much more relevant to its national and dedicated base of readers. 

The project goals were to create a new brand vision through design and content that reflects the magazine’s broader audience as a voice for enlightened Christianity, serving members of the United Church of Canada seeking to understand what it means to be a spiritual or faithful person in Canada today. Its new mission and tagline is ‘social justice, spirituality and ethical living.’ 

As the driver of Broadview’s creative direction, I was tasked with designing a new brand/logo, clearly defining a cover strategy, and creating covers that resonate deeply with readers. The journalist excellence of Broadview’s stories are now better reflected by feature story designs that are more ideas driven, more conceptual with thoughtful typographic treatments.

Magazine covers were redesigned to resonate deeply with readers, getting to the heart of a subject with sophistication, intelligence and inspired curiosity. The new magazine’s cover typography has it’s cut lines fully integrated into the cover image and are the driving voice of the concept.
